[bangs head against virtual desk]
Today, March 25, 2025 was supposed to be a good day. My Tiernan revision was scheduled to arrive from Amazon. Instead, I opened the package to reveal…
…an old, out-of-date copy they had floating around in their warehouse since *November*.
Okay. Let's rewind a bit. I recently worked on a new version of Tiernan. Technically, this was a revision as the changes were things you might catch or update during the editing process. I worked extra hard to ensure my page count and chapter breaks stayed the same. This process began when I decided I wanted to tweak the spine of my existing cover. Canva, unfortunately, broke my file. My original design could not be replicated via Canva even though I hadn't touched the file in almost a year.
One thing led to the next and what emerged was the 2025 revision of Tiernan. To save costs, since I'm well outside of my Ingramspark 60-day window on revisions, I uploaded my new version to KDP only. The plan was to give the printed book one final proof this week, set up the paid revision on Ingramspark, and then to order copies for two upcoming signings as well as to fulfill several preorders from a recent event.
Unlike Ingram, KDP does not offer expedited printing or shipping. It took them 11 days to send me a preprinted copy of my old manuscript instead of my 2025 revision.
Amazon has copies of my book in their warehouse. KDP confirmed this today, but that the number of copies is “proprietary.” Some of these were preorders from Ingramspark before release last year. This specific iteration of the book never should have seen the light of day. IS printed early, when I was still in the editing process last year, despite stating they usually print 10 days prior to your release date. An untold number of customers received a prerelease version of Tiernan, and Amazon won't tell me how many this is nor will Ingram provide me with that data.
Now, with my 2025 revision, there would be a third revision of my book floating around under the same ISBN. And, apparently Amazon randomly prints copies on its own as the date on the back page of the copy I received today was 24 November 2024. I always hesitated to send someone to Amazon to buy Tiernan since some people received that prerelease copy even as late as last fall. Others received the proper version. It was hit or miss, and I could not control who received what.
This brings us back to today. In other words, rather than print me a fresh copy of my book and ship that, Amazon took their time, found a warehouse copy, and sent me that instead.
11 days after I placed the order.
I cannot vouch for what they have in inventory. Nor can I order author copies anymore and know what version I'll get.
So. I made a difficult decision. I unpublished my KDP version of Tiernan and sent Ingramspark a request to disable distribution there too. This means that effective today, the 1st Edition of The Tale of Tiernan is no longer for sale. This change might take a few days to propagate throughout the internet, though I'll remember March 25th as the day I officially discontinued the first version of my story.
This sucks. But, I have a plan. I’ll be setting up a true second edition via Ingram and enabling KDP/IS distribution later. For now, the only way to get a print copy of the 2nd edition will be via me or at a signing.
Sure, I’ll lose two ISBN “slots” from my 10 pack. But I’m tired of dealing with Amazon on this. I want my readers to receive the best version of my story, and I cannot guarantee that will be the case under the current ISBN.
Wish me luck as I scramble to get my 2nd Edition ready by my next signing in Ashtabula, OH on April 18...
